• 2018 NESEA Boston: Big Building Implications for Multifamily Passive House - Presentation on the impact and strategies for controlling internal loads in multifamily passive house projects.

• 2016 PHIUS Conference: Passive Without Compromise - Joint presentation with BarlisWedlick Architects on some of the single family passive house projects completed by the team and how there is no need to sacrifice superior design when choosing passive.

• Columbia County Habitat for Humanity Passive Townhomes - (2016). Report on the Columbia County Habitat for Humanity (New York, Climate Zone 5A) passive townhomes, including documentation of cost and performance.

• Measured Performance of Four Passive Houses on Three Sites in New York State - (2014). Reports on the design, construction and performance of four passive house projects. Includes in-service energy consumption and comfort measurements over one year.

 

Retrofit

• Downstate Air Source Heat Pump Demonstration - (2022). This presentation demonstrates heat pump viability costs and savings from 20 different residential sites while also discussing best practices and helpful resources for installers. Final Presentation for NYSERDA.

• Integrated Physical Needs Assessments (IPNAs): What, Why, & How - (2019). This presentation covers what IPNAs are; why you may need one; how to make them go smoothly; how to interpret and use the results; and potential ties to other NYSERDA programs and state/city requirements. Presented at NYSERDA Multifamily Summit, October 2019.

• Evaluating Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems for Deep Energy Retrofits - (2017). NYSERDA report on the results of two deep energy retrofits using exterior insulated finish system (EIFS) including panelized system on a multifamily building.

• Evaluating an Exterior Insulation and Finish System for Deep Energy Retrofits - (2014). Building America report analyzing a deep energy retrofit of a house on Long Island, using an exterior insulated finish system (EIFS); includes results from one-year of performance monitoring.

• Public Housing: A Tailored Approach to Energy Retrofits - (2016). Building America report on work completed with four public housing authorities on an approach to energy efficiency improvements that can be seamlessly integrated into housing operations.

• Air Distribution Retrofit Strategies for Affordable Housing - (2014). Building America report comparing the use of aerosol duct sealing to manual duct sealing methods in a sample of public housing units in Raleigh, NC.

• Case Study of Envelope Sealing in Existing Multiunit Structures - (2012). This report describes envelope air sealing that was included in the retrofit of a 244 unit low-rise multifamily housing complex in Durham, N.C. On average, total leakage was reduced by nearly half.

 

New Construction

• Embodied Carbon in Construction - (2021). Presentation to AIA Custom Residential Architectural Network.

• Zero Energy Ready Home Multifamily Case Study Analysis - (2016). Two multifamily buildings planned in Climate Zone 4 were analyzed to determine the cost, energy and performance implications of redesigning them to comply with the Zero Energy Ready Home program.

• NYSERDA High Performance Residential Design Challenge - (2014). Report on the results of five high performance homes in New York State, including costs and long-term performance results.

 

Multifamily Building Systems

• New Heat Pump Technologies to the Rescue - (2020). Presentation on promising new heat pump products delivered at NESEA’s Building Energy NYC Conference 2020.

• NYSERDA Multifamily Central Domestic Hot Water System Controls - (2019). Final report of the 40-site DHW recirculating controls demonstration project.

• 2018 NYSERDA Multifamily Partner Summit: Emerging Technology Demonstration - Multifamily Central Domestic Hot Water System Controls - Presentation interim results of the 40-site DHW recirculating controls demonstration project.

• Control Strategies to Reduce the Energy Consumption of Central Domestic Hot Water Systems - (2016). Domestic water heating (DHW) is the second largest energy end use in U.S. buildings, exceeded only by space conditioning. This Building America report describes results from two buildings where a variety of recirculating system controls were employed and monitored.

• 2015 Building America Webinar Presentation: Energy Efficient Controls for Multifamily Domestic Hot Water Systems - Presentation on various central domestic hot water energy savings strategies.

• Thermostatic Radiator Valve Evaluation - (2015). Building America report evaluating the impact of TRVs in a multifamily building in New York City.

• Mini-Split Heat Pumps Multifamily Retrofit Feasibility Study - (2014). Modeling analysis of the cost effectiveness of retrofitting multifamily buildings in cold climates with ductless air source heat pumps.

• Hydronic Heating Retrofits for Low-Rise Multifamily Buildings: Boiler Control Replacement and Monitoring - (2014). Building America report analyzing the results of various boiler control strategies in three multifamily buildings in Cambridge, MA.

• Overheating in Hot Water- and Steam-Heated Multifamily Buildings - (2013). Building America report analyzing New York City apartment temperature data to estimate the extent and energy impacts of overheating.

• Centrally Managed Room Air Conditioners for Load Control and Demand Response - (2013). Report summarizing a NYSERDA-supported demonstration project involving the replacement of 200 through-wall cooling units in a multifamily building with networked units that communicate to reduce peaks loads and can respond to grid curtailment events (demand response).
